Izard County was the 13th county to be formed in
the territory of Arkansas on October 27, 1825. It was created from part of the pre-existing Independence County and named for George Izard, the second territorial governor of Arkansas.

Melbourne was once named Mill Creek. The first post office was established under that name on January 14, 1854. Mill Creek was declared the county seat on May 10, 1875.
  
The name was subsequently changed from Mill Creek to Melbourne on February 16, 1876.
  
Natural beauty can be found at every bend of the road in Melbourne, but the beauty of our community spirit shines even brighter. Melbourne's people are friendly and progressive in spirit.
